Gardens are in full bloom during the winter months and the residents of Faridabad make full use of this season to dress up their green patches. This season, the gardens and nurseries will not only be adorned by seasonal flowers of varied colours and shapes but exotic vegetables and medicinal herbs. “it’s difficult to find vegetables like pok choi or Chinese cabbage in the local markets of Faridabad readily. Sometimes one has to travel to Delhi to pick up the greens that you like to enjoy in your soups and salads in winter,”

Planted seasonal greens in her garden needed to enhance the flavor of soups and to adorn the dining table during the winter months. “Gardening is an art which teaches you patience,” she says, before adding, “When you experiment with new plants and herbs, you have to wait patiently to see if the stint has worked. I realize that planting new varieties of plants, or any kinds of plants for that matter requires commitment. More often than not, the result is satisfying.”

Besides exotic vegetables, herbs like parsley, lemon grass and oregano are also being grown by those who understand the flavours and tastes of gourmet food. Since herbs like these are not readily available in the industrial city, the efforts of such green fingers are being widely applauded by the other residents the aloe vera plant is yet another plant species adorning many private nurseries and gardens.

Besides exotic vegetables, exquisite flowers are also greatly in demand. The coloured gladiolas. “Gardening is a year-long process. It isn’t restricted only to the winter months. To bear proper fruit, one has to concentrate and work hard throughout the year. It is the winter months which bear fruit and the hard work is recognized,”

If you thought that one needs independent houses to develop green spaces, then you can learn from Radhika Anand’s example. This resident of Charmwood Village says, “Even though I live in an apartment, I still have a variety of flowers, medicinal plants and herbs that I have planted in my balconies which have been converted to green areas. If you love nature, you will always nurture if and have place for it in your home and heart,” she says.
